LO1: Analysing different scripts.

Style and content.
The house style of the script is commonly written in a currier font and the size is usually in 12, this is because it is made very clear to read and looks organised and neat. The writing tends to be written in a middle column for dialogue, this is so it is easy to follow and you don't have to read all the way cross the paper.  They can be written formally or informally depending of the genre and what the script is for, for example, for a TV news broadcast the script will be very formal as they are reading out of previous serious events that have happened, the sound comparison of a radio chat show and a TV news broadcast is that a radio chat show tends to be more relaxed and informal where as it is very important that anything broadcasted on the news is scripted and serious. There are different types of mode of address, peer to peer is informal and how you would speak to your friends, the radio script i chose is this mode of address. teacher to pupil is formal as it usually means you are being instructed and told what to do, for example, this is the mode of address for the TV news cast script i analysed. Mother to child is both formal and informal.

Screenplays have character descriptions in order to show how the actor needs to be acting to be playing the role of this character. Different people use scripts, the script is to guide someone on what they say on camera or radio. A computer game would have a flow chart to plan out a plot and characters for the game, it makes it easy to follow and plan keeping everything organised. A flowchart can also show each different movement which can be made by a game that is single stranded, this is so the game can have lots of different options and freedom of what the character can do, for example Heavy Rain.Presenters and characters are justified to the middle so dialogue is always clear, the names of who ever is speaking has their name or character name above the writing they are meant to be saying. Video games have a synopsis because it shows the plot and introduces main characters and what you have to do as part of this story, it gives an idea on how you are going to be involved in the game and the context of it.  TV shows, Films, all have stage directions and locations, this is in order to let people know the plan of where the actors or presenters have to stand. Sound effects are used to set the scene to create the digesis. The mode of address means how dialogue is brought across, for example peer to peer, mother to child and teacher to pupil. The narrative structures of screenplays includes titles, synopsis, location (INT. EXT.) The characters names are usually in bold to make it easier to follow the script with out accidentally reading the name, it also shows the fade in and fade out.

Narrative Structure.
The four types of narrative structure in script writing.

Single Stranded: This means you are learning from this characters perspective or you are playing as a character. This can make the audience get really into it as they feel like they are the actual character.

Multi Stranded: This means there are lots of characters involved. Lots of cross cutting of different narratives happening at the same time. This can take awhile for he audience to get a hang of who each character is and getting to know them.

Linear: This means it has a beginning a middle and an end, it establishes characters and location in the beginning and then the middle climaxes and creates the main plot and enigma, and the end shows how it finishes to bring it all together and then everything is usually resolved. This makes sense to the audience, it is easy to follow and keeps the audiences attention.

Non Linear: This means that the story doesn't have an order but it is still understandable and makes sense to the audience, for example, Scott Pilgrim vs the world has a non linear script.
A TV news broadcast running order is different to the rest. This can become confusing if the audience isn't giving their full attention.

Genre.

Fiction: Fiction means that it is made up. For example scripts that have mythical creatures is clearly not based on a real event. The TV drama script on my blog is fiction.

Non fiction: Non fiction is based on real events. Documentaries have a non fiction script. The TV news broadcast script on my blog is Non fiction.

Target audience.

The target audience for video games are stereotypically teenage males, it's a way of escaping from reality. Not many teenage boys have an income so they depend on their parents who are most likley to be ABC1.

The target audience for screenplays depends on which genres, for example a Disney film will attract a young audience. All films are given a rating for example 'U' means universal, so anyone can watch it. 'PG' means parental guidance. '12a' means you can watch it at 12 with parental guidance. '12+' means you can watch it from 12 or above. '15+' means you must be 15 or above to watch. and '18+' means you must be 18 or above to watch. Usually the reason for something being rated an 18 is because it is too sexually graphic, violent or both.

The target audience for a TV news broadcast is mainly aimed at adults but anyone is legally allowed to watch it, I think this because if there is something about murder etc, it tends to be too graphically described for younger viewers.

The target audience for TV drama scripts are stereotypically aimed at middle age women, they are usually ABC1 demographics as they are working class and have a fair income. Due to watershed, if the drama is past 9pm it has a more mature audience.

N.I: News Item. This means that there is no video support, it is only 30 seconds long and is read by the anchor.

Silent: The presenters voice is anchored to the visuals and is the only sound (Cutaways)

Nat Sot: The voice of the presenter is anchored and the visuals sound natural (fire incident)

Sot: This stands for Sound on tape. If it's an interview, a VO or nat sound.

V.O: This stands for voiceover, it is the presenter narrating the visual.

LO1: Assignment Brief Scenario

I have been asked by Sheffield Live TV to produce a 5 minute TV news broadcast script for the weekly news section for 'Games Corner'. You will research current games news (new releases/reviews etc) for the week that you have been assigned to help write your script. you will gain client feedback for the script that you produce and be required to make amendments based on the feedback.

After completing this unit i will understand scripts and how to write one and what part they play in the range of media products. We will have a selection of ideas, and use one of these ideas in order to help us write a script.

Jasmine Sahv is the production assistant at Sheffield Live and Vicky Kilby is the Presenter.

Sheffield Live is a subsidiary and was launched on the 23rd of September 2014, you can listen to Sheffield live on Sky and Virgin as well as on the website. It was originally a community radio station.
